Helmeted Hornbill

Towering high in the forest canopy, the Helmeted Hornbill is one of Borneo’s most extraordinary — and most endangered — birds. With a large, solid casque atop its beak and a haunting, echoing call that can carry for miles, this species once thrived across tropical forests. But today, it faces a silent crisis.

The Helmeted Hornbill is easily recognized by its solid casque — a helmet-like structure on its head, made of dense keratin. We are also doing research on them. Sadly, this casque has made the bird a major target for poachers, who illegally trade it like ivory. With slow reproduction rates and vanishing habitats, the species is now critically endangered.
