Endemic means animals that are found only in that one destination and nowhere else. This article is about 10 unique top endemic animals found on Borneo.



1. Kinabalu Pit Viper

There are 7 species of pit viper on borneo and kinabalu pit viper perhaps most electrifying pit viper species in the region.

So far, it is only found in the Kinabalu National Park, Sabah.




2. Purple Stick Insect

Most people know stick insects are amazing in camouflage, and come in all sort of colours; green, brown, and they blended very well. Did you know there are also purple stick insects? We call it the Lucia Purple Stick Insect. So far, it only recorded in the Lucia Mountain in Tawau Hills Park.




3. Borneo Bay Cat

The Bay Cat is found only on the island of Borneo and appears to be widely distributed on the island. This is the most elusive and rarest wild cat in the world!





4. Whitehead Trogon

Endemic trogon species found on the island of Borneo and the best place to see it is also at Kinabalu Park and also recorded in other parks as well.






5. Whitehead Squirrel

The white head squirrel, it is a small species of squirrel, pygmy squirrel only found in Borneo and the best place to see it is at Kinabalu Park. It also can be found in mount Lucia.





6. Bornean Elephants

Bornean elephant, are only found in the island of Borneo. It is the world smallest species of elephants and the best place to see them is near Kinabatangan River, side of Kalabakan Road, Maliau Basin and Deramakot.




7. Red Leaf Monkey

The red leaf monkey is an endemic species of primates found on the island of Borneo and has been recorded in all over the island in different parks. The best place to see them up close and personal are at Tawau Hills Park, Danum Valley, and Gomantang.




8. Borneo Flying Frog

It is only found in Borneo and has found in various park such as Tawau, Danum Valley. It is a nocturnal animal just like the viper and it is usually found in pool or water.





9. Borneo Suckerfish

This Borneo endemic lives in clear shallow streams that are rich in oxygen. You can usually spot them in rivers that have abundant sandy, rocks and gravel substrate as well as big boulders.




10. Brunei Loach

This species is native to the freshwater habitats of Brunei which can be found in Tenburong river basin. The Brunei loach is known for its unique appearance and behaviour, often found in fast-flowing streams and rivers.
